Info: A nice, full perspective render of my cathedral model with skylight illumination. This cathedral project was pretty demanding since I had a very limited time budget to work with, and I had to construct a separate interior model as well. Nevertheless, it was a blast to work on, and I learned a ton about modular construction (that is building only certain segments of the overall geometry and cloning them to speed up the modeling process). A lot of my inspiration for the design came from famous European cathedrals constructed in the middle ages such as the Chartres Cathedral of France.

Info: A close up render of the cathedral. I still used skylight as my lighting scheme here. The advantages of it are that everything in the scene is nicely and evenly lit, but the downside is the enormous rendering time. The glows on the stained glass windows were achieved within 3DSMax with the lens effect postproduction method.

Info: Another up close render but this time with a dramatic camera angle in full force :) The one aspect of the cathedral which became most challenging was definitely the central stained glass window. By using spline modeling for that part of the project I was able to successfully carve in the detail I needed in a short amount of time.

Info: This was more of a test render than anything else as can be evidenced by the rather empty and barren background. The actual sky was a texture created from one of my digital photographs after I took it into Photoshop and tinkered with it. Once again I used skylight and light tracer for the illumination.

Info: A nice wide shot of the cathedral exterior scene. Here you can see some of the details which are harder to see in the other renders like the trees, path, and moon. There are certain things I definitely want to add in the future such as more foliage, grass, and organic elements. No skylight used for this render as can be seen by the different overall "look". A few colored omni lights coupled with a spotlight did the trick here.

Info: A flat, untextured render of the scene which will hopefully give an idea of what the basic geometry looks like. I used a skylight to give the scene a bit more dimension.

Info: Here is the wireframe render of the previous shot which should give one an idea of the level of complexity of certain elements in the scene.

Info: An up close view of the cathedral. The two barren trees in the front of the church were fun to create. I used a combination of a special plugin as well as good ol' fashioned spline modeling.

Info: Another close up view of the cathedral. For this shot I adjusted some of my omni lights to better capture the ominous mood of the scene. Also added a bit of a specularity to the moon in the sky.

Info: An extreme close up of the cathedral facade. Each of the stained glass windows was individually mapped and adjusted in order to fit the geometry. Luckily for me I knew of several clone tools within 3DSMax which helped me out tremendously in terms of saving time on the project.

All the construction ideas I implemented were inspired by my research on European medieval cathedrals and monasteries. I once again used a skylight to give the scene a bit more dimension.

Info: A more cinematic render of the cathedral entrance. I mainly used this (and a series of renders like this) to experiment and tweak my lighting scheme. This was one of the better renders from that series in my opinion.

Info: This render of the scene is one of my favorites for two reasons: one being that it matches my concept artwork of this very project perfectly perspective wise and the second is that it allowed me to experiment with a great worm's eye view camera setup.
