Info: I built this vehicle as part of an assignment for one of my prototyping classes. As its name implies the Desert Prowler is a ground vehicle best suited for the dry and arid climates of desert wastelands. The all terrain Prowler can be quite effective in almost any environment however, and boasts a ruggedness few vehicles can match. A heavy duty ram bar is installed on the front for close skirmishes while a set of powerful high beam lights coupled with cutting edge radar enable the Prowler to tackle various night ops.

Info: Another perspective render of the Desert Prowler. The powerful minigun which comes standard on all Prowlers is indeed a fearsome weapon. It is a multibarreled machine gun variant with an extremely high rate of fire (several thousand rounds per minute) employing Gatling-style rotating barrels. The electronic swivel head ensures a wide range of motion for the weapon which is controlled by a computer console operated by the passenger.

Info: An overhead perspective render of the vehicle from within 3D Studio Max. The textures were a big part of making the vehicle successful in terms of overall presentation. For the body I impemented a desert camo style offshoot of the US military's own. For the various weapon LED and electronic panels (which can be seen in later renders) I used real captures of computer monitors, watches, and car MP3 stereos. The vehicle windshield has a "dummy" texture if you will since within UT2004 I created a special reflective shader for the glass which reacts to the environment much like real glass does.

Info: A screenshot of the Prowler in action within UT2004. What a great feeling it was to be able to drive my own creation inside the game! Tons of work went into the vehicle scripting to make the Prowler react as it should. The vehicle is fully driveable with a working suspension and all terrain capabilities, working tail lights, headlights which light up the environment dynamically (are turned off in the above shot), and a fully working passenger chaingun with telescoping zoom. The vehicle is best used with one driver doing the handling and a passenger in the rear taking care of the shooting.

Info: A screenshot of the Prowler in action within UT2004. You can see the glass shader I mentioned earlier in effect here. Currently no one is manning the chaingun turret.

Info: A screenshot of the Prowler in action within UT2004. Here I get some major air time as I clear a nice sized jump in the enemy base area. Since the Prowler is so rugged jumps like this are no problem.

Info: A screenshot of the Prowler in action within UT2004. Here I re-enter the Prowler from the back so I can take command of the large chaingun. Unfortunately my passenger was incapacitated so I had to pull double duty...

Info: A screenshot of the Prowler in action within UT2004. Here it's clearly visible that the Prowler has taken some damage and its engine is smoking. Guess I better be a bit more careful how I drive...

Info: A front render of the Prowler. Setting up the vehicle to work smoothly was a slow process since I also had to build a skeleton system (or rig) for the body of the vehicle (wheels, axles, suspension) as well as the weapon (attach point, projectile spawn point, pitch and yaw). For each of these areas I had to construct a bone and then assign an appropriate parent/child relationship to ensure the final rig would work properly.
Completed on: 5/29/2006
Medium: 3D Studio Max 8
Info: A frontal render of the vehicle here. The overall look and style of the Prowler was heavily influenced by military humvees. I like their durability, rugged feel, and ability to adapt to any situation.
Completed on: 5/29/2006
Medium: 3D Studio Max 8
Info: A nice side render of the Desert Prowler. The design of the chaingun was one that I mostly came up with after some heavy research into the actual real life weapon and its implementation in military affairs.
Completed on: 5/29/2006
Medium: 3D Studio Max 8
Info: A rear render of the Desert Prowler. Here you can start to see some of the detail work in the weapon design as well as the electronic devices. There was a pretty tight limit to the overall model and weapon in terms of polygon count so I stayed within the budget and passed on some extra detail work.
Completed on: 5/29/2006

Info: Another rear render of the Desert Prowler. Lighting was once again achieved with skylight and light tracer.

Info: A screenshot of the Prowler in action within UT2004 getting involved in a major fender bender. Even though the Prowler is by far the lighter vehicle, it easily held its own.

Info: A screenshot of the Prowler in action within UT2004. Here's an enemy who tried to sneak up on me, but after a heated battle decides to high tail it. It's too bad for him I caught up soon after and finished the job :)

Info: A close up render of the weapon's texture and model work. A lot of the ideas for the computer screen imagery came from real life objects.
Completed on: 5/29/2006
Medium: 3D Studio Max 8
Info: A close up render of the weapon itself. The chaingun is a very devastating weapon in the game and featues a full 360 degree range of motion as well. There's a little Easter egg in there as well since at the bottom of the main gun compartment you can see the chaingun's manufacturer: Gregos Industries.

Info: A flat render of the Desert Prowler here showing the model work I did on the vehicle. I'm very happy with how the wheels turned out especially.
