Jagganath

A collection of Jagganath t-shirt designs for the
annual Rathayatra chariot festival held in Chicago. Had a blast designing these!
Completed on: 6/6/2004
Medium: Straight image manipulation and coloring in Photoshop
Info: This was one of several designs I made (this was the only one which was actually used due to printing issues) for the Rathayatra chariot festival held in Chicago. The festival is a wonderful event funded and supported by ISKCON and has been going on for a few decades here in the United States and for many thousands of years in India. The festival includes singing, dancing, feasting, and wonderful lectures by leading spiritual authorities in the movement. There are also bands that play at the festival, actors that perform entertaining dramas, and shows for the younger ones as well. There is free food and a chance to meet many wonderful and friendly people. For a closer look at the festival and its history check my links page for info. I was actually approached to do it a few days before the festival was to be held in Chicago. I tried my best with the amount of time I had and everything turned out better than I had hoped!

Info: This was one of many designs I did for the festival. For each design I did I was limited in the images I could use in terms of content and overall quantity. The image my good friend provided me with (smiling Jagganath) served as my base for the rest of the design. Here I decided to play off of the unique flower like shape and cool colors of the design. I like the general flow of the piece as well as the yellow outline which permeates the design.

Info: Yet another piece I came up with that same day. In this one I chose some less vibrant colors and an interesting flower design for the background part. With the use of some layer styles in Photoshop I think I was able to pull off a successful piece although later I learned it's hard to create a t-shirt print from a design which has drop shadows like I used here.

Info: This was (and still is) one of my favorite designs out of all that I did. I think the green tones as well as the cartoon like type really gives it a fun and vibrant look which is perfectly indicative of the festival as a whole. I think the happy nature of the design really draws in not just the kids but adults as well.

Info: One of my other personal favorites out of the six that I did. Here the focus was on warm colors and soft tones. After I finished this one I dubbed it "sunny Jagganath" because of its bright nature. I was probably most pleased with how this one came out overall with its nice flow and interesting type style.

Info: This design is what the final print (Jagganath 1) was actually based on. I like the movement and flow in this piece as well as the globe design behind Jagganath which is supposed to represent the fact that the Rathayatra festivals are held all over the world in numerous countries and cities.
