Moonlight
Monastery

A collection of screen grabs showcasing my very first level
designed in the Unreal Editor from the award winning game Unreal Tournament 2004.
While the editor provides its own unique learning curve and challenges, it is
ultimately a very rewarding engine which allows for the creation of almost
anything imaginable. I really played with creating a variety of moods for this
level.

Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A shot of the main area in the monastery. I really tried to emphasize dramatic lighting as well as the mood of a solemn and abandoned environment. The stained glass windows were all set up as dynamic projectors to add an extra atmospheric effect.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A shot of the entrance hallway within the monastery. Experimenting with particle effects to make the torches look realistic was a blast.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A shot of the moon chamber located in the catacombs of the monastery. The central pool in the room has a secret passage for those brave enough to dive to the lowest level. Really played around with lighting here.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: An overhead shot of the spiral staircase tower located in the east wing of the monastery. The tower is a dangerous place to fight in as a drop from its upper reaches spells doom. At the very top of the tower there is a leap of faith leading to a wonderful prize.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A screen grab from showcasing a lone hallway from the east section of the monastery. Since there is no cover here it is a dangerous place to be for a combatant without a long range weapon. One of my favorite areas in terms of lighting and mood.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: Another shot from the same hallway but facing south. To achieve the look I was going for I had to implement a ton of colored lights with varying strengths and falloffs.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: This hallway leads upwards from the bowels of the monastery into the main altar room. Here I focused more on textures in order to achieve an interesting look for the area.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: This is a shot of the western hallway leading to the main altar area. Once again I focused on lighting here trying to convey a sense of an uneasy and foreboding calm. One can see the quiet night sky by looking outside.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A screengrab showing some of the interesting light and shadow patterns found in the eastern hallway.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A crane shot of the main altar area in the northernmost section of the monastery. The enormous demon statue was created in 3DSmax and then imported into the level.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: Another shot of the eastern hallway, this one at eye level. Much of the architectural choices were inspired by my research on medieval monasteries and cathedrals of Europe.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: The southern entrance of the monastery once again. The arched ceilings were an addition I made after my initial level sketches.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: Another look at the moon chamber located in the basement of the monastery.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: An up close look at the skylight in the moon chamber. Even though there was a tight deadline on the project I made sure to always keep my focus on the various textures so that the environment could look that much better in the end.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A screengrab of the mausoleum area in the monastery. The numerous support columns provide an excellent area for intense firefights between players as there is sufficient cover for dodge and evade tactics.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: An overhead shot of one of the connecting chambers in the west wing of the monastery.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: Another shot of the mausoleums which act as a connecting hub to all of the underground chambers of the monastery.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A shot of a dimly lit staircase which I really like due to the mood and atmosphere it exudes.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A bird's eye view of the central area of the level. The upper catwalks are a great area to snipe from and are excellent for scouting the area.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A shot of one of the stairways leading up from the basement into the monk's quarters. Here you can also see some of the flame emitters at work.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: With this screengrab I tried to show how I used projectors to try and add more eye candy to the level. The stained glass texture is being projected in real time so that anyone running through it will have the texture projected on them as well.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: An overhead shot of the main altar area showcasing the many entrance and exit points.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A shot of the central area of the monastery from the second floor catwalk. A great vantage and snipe point.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A screengrab of the eastern hallway once again.
Completed on: 12/8/2005
Medium: Unreal 2004 Editor, 3D Studio Max 7
Info: A shot from one of the secret passages in the level. The player has to actually crawl through this tunnel as it is very small. Due to the darkness a player can hide out in this area and confuse his pursuers. It is a dangerous spot to be in if cornered so players have to be sharp and vigilant while down there as well.
